There is no equivalency, moral or otherwise

Three days after Trump declared his candidacy for the 2024 election, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced the appointment of Jack Smith to serve as Special Counsel. Mr. Garland made the appointment in his continuing quest to restore independence and political neutrality to a Department of Justice that Trump considered his personal goon squad to settle scores, punish people he thought disloyal to him, and soften his increasingly corrupt visage with a Kari Lake-style filter. And, of course, to sow ‘official’ doubt about the outcome of the 2020 election.

Mr. Smith accepted the appointment and is now tasked with overseeing two ongoing criminal investigations of Trump on behalf of the DOJ. The first investigation relates to Trump’s unprecedented, attempted coup against the United States, the unlawful interference with the transfer of power after the 2020 presidential election and certification of the Electoral College vote held on January 6–7, 2021. The second investigation concerns Trump’s alleged violations of the Espionage and Presidential Records Acts for his illegal possession of classified, military, and presidential records and the possible obstruction of the investigation itself.
