Disney wasn’t bluffing. It will say “gay.” As its feud with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis heats up, Disney scuttled its $1 billion+ campus that would have brought more than 2,000 jobs to Florida with an average annual salary of $120,000. Disney, a company that employs over 75,000 people in Central Florida, is opting for a business-friendlier state to build its campus, one that welcomes a broad range of people and ideas, a safe environment with leadership that doesn’t retaliate against those whose vocalized viewpoints on policy differ from the governor’s, or against challenges that get under his very thin skin. DeSantis is just fine costing his state billions to wage his culture war: he wants to be president. For more than a decade, maybe a lifetime, Florida’s second most prominent bully has been preparing himself, and his brand, for a presidential bid. Any serious contender for president must publish a book in the lead up. DeSantis’s latest tome, The Courage to Be Free, Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival, is an anti-woke manifesto, appealing to grievance voters — which include those who vote against their interests to own the libs — while “trying his best to tiptoe around the Trump dragon.” Its clichéd title is defied by DeSantis’s despotic reign of terror against women, the LGBTQ+ community, parental rights, education, freedom of thought and expression, and tolerance.
Unfortunately, the book “will leave some supporters, who have encouraged DeSantis to ‘humanize himself’ for a national audience, sorely disappointed.” As expected, “this one reads like a politician’s memoir churned out by ChatGPT.” Disney, I’m sure, could easily create and put to work an automaton of DeSantis that has more lifelike characteristics than the original. I’m thinking Seven Dwarfs Plus One Mine Train, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, It’s a Small Man After All, or The Haunted Governor’s Mansion. The DeSantis campaign would likely take exception if Disney infused the robot with lofty human traits, say empathy, compassion, self-awareness, and tolerance.
