I credit the Republican Party with a perfect rebuttal to President Biden’s State of the Union: perfect planning, perfect choreography, and the perfect person to deliver the perfect response that perfectly encapsulated in a short 17 minutes exactly what the Republican Party stands for. The response perfectly symbolized what the party has done to women’s rights in the United States and is doing to the country.

After watching the State of the Union address, I watched every second of the Official Republican Response (in fairness to bothsidesism), with a desire to learn and a willingness to let Republicans convince me that their party’s vision for the United States and its policies are in the best interests of the country. Frankly, I could not avert my eyes once the camera trained on Senator Katie Britt (R-Alabama). She declared what a terrible state our country is in through a well-rehearsed, whispery voice and cadence fit for toddlers (that might be why I was so mesmerized) and through a broad, unflinching smile. At times when I thought she might cry, I was worried her smiling lips might be stuck to her teeth.

Particularly clever was choosing the young, up-and-coming ultra-conservative junior Republican senator from the I.V.F-You state of Alabama, and mother of two youngsters. She was the perfect person to deliver the official response during the month we celebrate women, and from her cozy kitchen, to boot. Cleverly, they also left to our imagination whether she was barefoot and pregnant.

Many conservative commentators — well pretty much everyone except Tommy Tuberville — panned Senator Britt’s Official Republican Response. See Notes below. The criticisms coming from the right reveal a serious lack of self-awareness among Republicans and are totally unfair. For those on the right who criticized, it must have been like hearing their own voice and hating the sound of it or looking in the mirror and hating what they saw. Senator Britt’s Official Response represented the party admirably — and accurately — illustrating many of the characteristics that best define the party.
